The Regional Unit of Kilkis is located in Central Macedonia, between the Regional Unit of Thessaloniki and the borders of Greece - Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. The local economy is mainly based on agriculture and livestock while manufacturing and industry have evolved in recent decades generating 50% of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) in the region. Kilkis is the main administrative and commercial center.
Tourism in the area is fairly limited as tourists prefer to visit the area and stay overnight in the nearby large cities, such as Thessaloniki. However, there is a large numbers of pilgrims who visit the local monasteries. Kilkis is a beautiful place with mountains, the lake of Doirani which is ideal for fishing and the mud baths of Pikrolimni.
