The Prefecture of Xanthi belongs to Eastern Macedonia and Thrace and is located between the prefectures of Drama, Kavala and Rodopi. It extends from the Rhodope Mountains and the Greek-Bulgarian border to the Aegean Sea. The ecosystem around Nestos River, Vistonida Lake and the shores of Vistonikos Gulf is characterized by high biodiversity and is of great ecological importance. Apart from its natural beauty, Xanthi is also known for its traditional villages, historical monasteries, archaeological sites and intense cultural activity.
The city of Xanthi is the administrative, commercial and cultural center of the prefecture. It is built at the foot of Rhodope Mountain and it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities of Greece. Xanthi is a multicultural region and it is characterized by the harmonious coexistence of the Christian and Muslim population. Other important towns of the prefecture are the historical Abdera (the birthplace of philosopher Democritus) and the picturesque Porto Lagos.
